Instagram revealed on Wednesday two new feed styles, including the long-awaited reverse-chronological view. That is, you can avoid things like algorithmic sorting based on who and what the app thinks you like. Basically, you can star up to 50 accounts, and their posts will appear higher in your main feed. In a separate “Favorites” stream, Instagram claims the most recent posts appear first.
Instagram states of the “following stream” that you can now “see the latest posts from accounts that you follow, in the order they were posted,” In my opinion, this is the way every social media should display feeds.
In the press release announcing the change, Instagram head Adam Mosseri writes: “Over time, we’re going to add more recommendations to your feed based on your interests.” Our interpretation of this is that more specific content and advertising is on the way.
